 "Not bad for a first blu-ray" 2010-01-10

I've had the samsung for about three weeks. No complaints so far. It's hooked to a Sony WEGA (old school HDTV). DVD load time is fine, haven't loaded any true blu-rays as of yet.

It's hooked to Brighthouse high-speed at about 10mbps. Connection was easy, initial software upgrade took a few minutes longer than I would have liked but oh well. After that I had Netflix streaming going in about 10 minutes.

Got my Pandora account tied in and it sounds great.

I've watched about 6 movies from Netflix, download was quick, so far no issue with the streaming. It's not the best blu-ray on the market but that's fine I don't have a cutting edge receiver or TV either. It does what I want.

 "WiFi ready" 2010-01-01

This is a great product. However, it is WiFi READY, not enabled. For WiFi, you will need a ~$50 (+ship) wireless adapter. Make sure you plug it into a router for the firmware upgrade.

 "Dont waste your time..." 2009-12-30

My intent here is to save you time.

To give you some background I purchased this for my mother after she saw how easy Netflix streams over my Xbox and PS3 (yes I have both). She previously had a Sony Blu-ray that stopped working due to the firmware updates required. After looking online I saw the Samsung brand and noticed the Wi-Fi ability and purchased it for her. I figured the firmware would update as needed similar to the PS3.

First: While the product is named "Wi-Fi Blu-ray..." it is not. You will need to purchase another piece that cost over $75.

Secondly: The setup for wireless is much more difficult compared to both the Xbox and PS3. Using a laptop I verified the signal of our router and it remains strong. However the adapter frequently looses the signal. This leads to having to setup the network repeatedly.

My advice: If you want a wireless Blu-Ray Player that streams Netflix, purchase a PS3. It may cost more than this Samsung, but it works the best I have seen.

 "Wireless? Really?" 2009-12-30
By E. Osterberg (Minneapolis, Minnesota US)
I purchased this as a gift for my mother. I expected to buy the "wireless blu-ray player" and a wireless access point and be ready to watch programming from the Internet including Netflix.

Couple of big problems. #1) The unit is wireless upgradable I guess. It supports the installation of a USB wireless dongle of which only one particular dongle is supported, its the highly overpriced Samsung dongle which isn't available anywhere in North Carolina at any retail outlet! There go my plans for setting up the unit for my Mom. 65 bucks for a wireless dongle? I can get these back home in generic form for about 15 bucks! Knowing what I do now, I wouldn't buy this unit. There are many other units with wireless included for less money if you add 65 bucks to this price. I would have returned this one, but it was a gift.

#2) Watchout, there's no captioning support for the online service providers in this player. It's a problem for any player with Netflix as they don't encode the data into the stream and we couldn't figure out how to display captions with any other stream.

"Do not upgrade firmware, and locks up on HD Netflix Streaming" 2009-12-27
By JPHSV (Huntsville, Alabama)
This is my 3rd player. I should have learned not to upgrade the firmware- EVER!!! First time, it quit playing Blue Ray discs, could only play normal DVDs. Customer service was quick and courteous but could not offer solution except to return the unit. Unit #2. After 1 month decided to go ahead and upgrade the firmware, what the heck the first time it was probably a fluke. NOT!! After the 3rd firmware update the system stopped working entirely -- Returned for a 3rd unit. Unit #3 - All seems to go well but I hate having to carefully select the "NO" option for upgrading my firmware. I have noticed that the video sometimes stops (freezes) when playing HD Netflix content. It may be an overheating problem. I would recommend that you test for yourself by playing a couple of HD Netflix movies in sequence to determine if you also have the same problem.
